DESCRIPTION:Yiddish in America. May is Jewish American Heritage Month an
d is a fitting time to learn about Jewish culture and life. This program
is an introduction to the world of Yiddish, the spoken and written lang
uage of eastern European Jews used in everyday life and culture in additio
n to the national languages from the countries in which they lived. With
the diaspora following World War II, Yiddish very nearly disappeared, spo
ked and read only by the older members of the community. Today it is fin
ding a resurgence, not only among Jews all over the world by people outsid
e of this community. Dr. Raphael Finkel of the University of Kentucky wi
ll talk about the history of Yiddish culture and its life in these United
States. This event is presented as part of the Yiddish Book Center's P
ublic Libraries Program, a partnership with the American Library Associati
on, and made possible by the Lilly Endowment, Inc.
