Yiddish in America. May is Jewish American Heritage Month and is a fitting time to learn about Jewish culture and life. This program is an introduction to the world of Yiddish, the spoken and written language of eastern European Jews used in everyday life and culture in addition to the national languages from the countries in which they lived. With the diaspora following World War II, Yiddish very nearly disappeared, spoked and read only by the older members of the community. Today it is finding a resurgence, not only among Jews all over the world by people outside of this community. Dr. Raphael Finkel of the University of Kentucky will talk about the history of Yiddish culture and its life in these United States.
This event is presented as part of the Yiddish Book Center's Public Libraries Program, a partnership with the American Library Association, and made possible by the Lilly Endowment, Inc.
