1969:  President Nixon wanted to end Russian support for North Vietnam.  He told our military that he wanted to scare the Russians by pretending to be so mad that he might use nuclear weapons, but to keep it secret from the US public. The “Madman Nuclear Alert” was complicated by a Russian plan to invade China.

Speaker Bruce Gordon got personally involved and tells what he saw.  Come and discuss how we came close to war without the US public or even Congress being aware of the danger.

The Military History Group is a bimonthly discussion group - please come prepared to offer your own knowledge of history and contribute toward making this an interesting session.
